Protect your Dog from Danger with Dog Crate Training
by Anthony Petrozzella
Dog crate training is essential for the safety of your dog. Some people think that putting their dog in a crate is cruel. However, you need to protect your dog from the dangers of your home, especially when you are not able to monitor every movement.
Dogs can find all sorts of trouble when you leave the house. Whether it is curiosity, boredom, or anger because you left them, dogs just know what will push your buttons! Not only that, they can get themselves in some seriously dangerous predicaments.
Dogs can get into the garbage and choke on something they ate. Or, they could decide to chew up the electrical cord to the lamp. Or, they could decide that the bottle of Ibuprofen you accidentally forgot to put away looks fun to play with, and then they are pleased to find out there is something tasty inside. Well, to a dog, if they can eat it, it is probably pretty good!
This is why dog crate training is an essential basic dog training step that every dog owner should train their dog on for proper dog care. It is your responsibility to protect your dog from the dangers of life.
Choosing a Dog Crate
Before you can begin dog crate training, you will need to choose a dog crate. There are three common styles to choose from, which are: wire crate, plastic/enclosed crate, or the mesh crate. The wire crate is a common dog crate that many dog owners will choose because your dog is able to see the outside world and be a part of the family while activities are going on. There is a removable tray that will help with cleaning up any accidents.
The plastic/enclosed crate is more for traveling. Your dog will be more secluded. This one is not recommended for dog crate training in the home. The mesh crate is not really one that is recommended, as well, because your dog will be able to destroy it quite easily, and then what is the purpose? Therefore, the wire crate is the best dog crate for dog crate training.
Now that you know what type of crate is best, you will have to decide on a size. Crates are not inexpensive; therefore, you will want to purchase one that is meant for the size of an adult dog. However, you will need to purchase a divider for the dog crate training process for dogs that are not yet potty trained. This is because your dog can only have enough room to turn around and lie down. Otherwise, your dog will do his duty on one end and sleep on the other! For older dogs that have been potty trained already, you will not need to purchase the divider.
Tips on Dog Crate Training
Use the dog crate as a positive form of reinforcement, and not as a punishment. When she whines or cries, correct her with a firm, yet sensitive command, such as "Quiet" or "Lay Down".
Never give plastic toys without supervision. They can choke. You can purchase a Nylabone or stuffed Kong. Add in some peanut butter, and your dog will be in heaven and quiet for some time.
Keep blankets out of the dog crate until he has mastered the potty training. Towels or blankets will encourage him to pee because it can be soaked up. Once your dog is potty trained, you can make the dog crate as comfortable as possible. Put your dog in the crate when you are home, as well. Otherwise, you dog will think he is being punished every time you leave. Put your dog in the crate during nap time or at a time when everyone is resting, during dinner, etc. However, make sure he is part of the daily family activities.
The dog crate should be inside with the family, not in the basement or garage. This isolation will cause social problems. If your dog should be settling down and the family is still being active, simply put a blanket over top the dog crate.
Dog crate training can not only provide safety for your dog, but a dog crate can be a place where your dog can go that is only his. Dog crates tend to become a place of security, and eventually your dog will love his dog crate!
