Making Time for the People You Love by Alan Bentley
Last weekend my daughter, Hannah and I had a special Daddy Daughter Day . Hannah suggested we travel to downtown Chicago and go to the American Girl Doll outpost near Michigan Avenue. She wanted to get a new outfit for her doll with the allowance that she saved up. We had been there before but we were always there under time constraints. Either we were downtown as a family with her younger brother Alan, or we had just spent two hours in a museum and wanted to go home. Her brother Alan could only last so long inside this girl's palace and I wasn't much better!
This time would be different. It would be our time. It would be our special daddy- daughter time, just the two of us. If Hannah wanted to spend our time slowly contemplating which outfit worked best, then so be it. She had the time to relax, have fun and just be herself. Since it was just Hannah and me, I encouraged her to take her time and go through all the dresses until she found the right one. She agreed, and for the next hour gathered up a list of possibilities.
Being more practically minded, I used to think that all dolls were the same, that one doll was just as good as another. Like most dads, I really saw no difference. It's just a doll right? Hannah's dolls seemed to have similar outfits and quite frankly they all looked the same. As those of you who have made the pilgrimage to an American Girl Doll shrine can attest, I couldn't have been more wrong.
The funny thing is that just like those dolls, our kids, spouses and loved ones all have different emotional needs that we can help satisfy. We shouldn't pigeon hole our loved ones into one big blob. They love us for the unique people that we are and we should give that love right back by being our unique and amazing selves.
My wife could have taken my daughter but my daughter for whatever reason felt that we should go together without the usual distractions like her little brother. I think it's really cool that my daughter could teach me to slow down and appreciate her even more than I already do.
The other cool thing is that anybody can do this with anyone they care about. All you have to do is spend some quality time alone with them whether over a beer or a drink of tea. Conversations go along way towards building the right kind of relationships.
