Losing A Friend, Not Memories by Kimberly Wolford

November 10, 2006 started out like any other day. Students at Tri-Valley High School finished their day and headed home. Before going home, a group of band students had to perform at the local elementary school. That was the last time some of us saw our friend, Anthony Mitchell, alive.

That afternoon, Anthony was in a car accident. His truck ran off the road and struck a tree. It is not certain why the accident occurred, but it has been asserted by both his family and the Ohio Highway Patrol that no drugs or alcohol were involved in the accident.

It wasn't until Sunday, November 12, that we heard the news that Anthony had died. We all knew that there had been an accident and that the outlook wasn't good, but we were all hoping and praying for Anthony to walk into the room. We all gathered at his best friend's house, and soon our band director was telling us the news. Anthony had put up a great fight, but he didn't make it through.

The next week was strange. We didn't know what was going on, and many of us didn't want to go to school at all. We are all more than friends; we are family, and a band. It was very hard to say goodbye. Soon it was time for the calling hours and the funeral. We all cried and mourned the loss of our friend.

One of the best memories that I have of Anthony is from the day of our home marching band competition. He and his best friend were walking down the street when the other boy barked at a dog. The dog started running after the boys, but they weren't scared. The dog was on a chain. Or so they thought. Anthony ended up getting bit on his backside. He proceeded to show most of the band.

And then there are the times that he got caught chewing gum in class and the band director would just point to the trash can. We all knew what was going on and the whole room would fill with laughter. The countless nicknames and talents of Anthony will live on. He was just a great kid, and his smile was infectious.

About the Author
Now, about a month later, we still feel the pain. We all know that Anthony is gone, but some of us don't want to believe it. I know that I can speak for all of the band members when I say, it's hard to say goodbye but we will always remember Anthony as the quirky kid who loved the outdoors, cracked jokes, and had a pet squirrel that he saved when it had fallen out of a tree. He is gone, but he will never be forgotten!
