Make Spa Safety a Priority
by Casey Ollson
Spa treatments are beneficial in many ways. They help people relax, reduce stress and are helpful in relieving many muscular and neurological problems. Unfortunately, a spa can also be a dangerous place if you're not careful.
In the United States, about 300 children under five drown in spas every year. Thousands more are rushed to emergency rooms or require hospitalization. Many suffer from permanent disability and brain damage as a result of these accidents.
Spas with drains that have faulty, missing or broken covers are potential deathtraps. They can entrap hair, limbs, jewelry and clothing. Since 1990, there have been 43 hair entanglement incidents, according to the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC). Of that number, 12 people died when their hair was sucked by the spa drain.
According to the CPSC, a hair entanglement accident occurs when an individual gets their hair caught in the drain or drain cover. Suction can sometimes be strong enough to hold a person, especially small children, under water. Most of these deaths happen when children are playing a hold their breath game.
At least 74 people have been involved in body entrapment accidents due to the strong suction of spa drains. This has caused two cases of disembowelment and 13 deaths.
Hot temperatures are another cause for alarm since they can cause drowsiness, lead to unconsciousness and result in drowning. Death from heat stroke is also common with raised body temperatures. Several deaths from hot water (110 degrees Fahrenheit) have been recorded by the CPSC.
To make your spa experience a pleasurable one and avoid unnecessary accidents, the CPSC recommends the following safety measures:
Use a locked safety cover when the spa is not in use and don't leave children alone there. Adult supervision is a must. Make sure the spa has anti-entrapment drain covers to reduce the risk of hair or body entrapment. If you're not sure, call a professional to check your spa. Be on the lookout for cracked or damaged drain covers. For added safety, don't let children play near the drain cover.
"Pools and spas are attractive to children, and children must be kept away from them in the absence of adequate supervision. A fence, wall or natural/artificial barrier should completely enclose your pool or spa. All gates or doors with access to the pool or spa should have a spring lock, self-closing and self-latching mechanism that protects against unauthorized entry and use. (The inside latch should be above the reach of toddlers or young children)," said the National Spa and Pool Institute.
To avoid heat stroke, ensure that water temperature is kept at 104 degrees Fahrenheit or below. Pregnant women and young children should consult a doctor before using a spa. Avoid drinking alcohol while in a spa.
